Complaint about Procompare platform — the contractor Theunis Steyn turned out to be a fraudster, yet he is still advertised on the site

I would like to formally express my disappointment and dissatisfaction with the services provided by the Procompare platform, which referred me to the contractor Theunis Steyn, acting on behalf of the company 180 Base Project.

In September 2024, through your website, I signed a contract with the contractor and made a 50% advance payment of 30,600 ZAR for the construction of a carport. More than eight months have passed since then, but the work has not started. Mr. Steyn postponed the deadlines six times, citing bad weather and personal issues. The last promised completion date — October 21, 2024 — was also missed.

In October 2024, I contacted a manager from the Procompare platform, and they assured me they would help resolve the issue. However, this remained only a verbal promise — no one has contacted me since. I was forced to consult a lawyer, and even the agreement with Theunis Steyn, acting on behalf of 180 Base Project, to pay 15,300 ZAR in installments over three months starting from April 2025, did not lead to a resolution.

Despite my numerous attempts to resolve the situation, I had to purchase aluminum beams myself, expecting the project to progress. However, no work was done, and the contractor effectively disappeared.

I emphasize: I did not find the contractor myself — the contact was provided by the Procompare platform, which claims to work only with verified and reliable specialists. After the initial delays, I filed a complaint with Procompare — they called me and promised to deal with the issue and help, but since then no real action has been taken.

Nevertheless, Mr. Theunis Steyn is still listed on the Procompare site and continues to receive orders from new clients. According to public reviews, he has gotten at least five new clients through your site after my complaint, which raises serious doubts about the reliability of your contractor screening system.

I demand an official response, a refund of the advance payment of 15,300 ZAR, compensation for the materials, and the removal of this contractor from your platform to protect other clients from similar situations.

I WAS STUCK AND PRO COMPARE CAME TO MY AID WITH PROFESSIONALS
I had wished to install solar in my house and started Googling. Pro Compare came up and I asked them if they could provide solar installers in my area. They did. Immediately they informed of other services they provide and I took advantage of that as I'd wanted to do extensions to my house but didn't know where to start. So I asked for names of architects, which they provided. One Mr Sarel Jansen, an architect, phoned me the following day after my enquiry and we had an appointment. That was in November 2024. Ever since that time we worked together with the architect until he delivered the approved plans from the municipality earlier this month.
I had already requested names of builders from Pro Compare by end of last year and they had provided some, of whom a number had contacted me. The municipality took some time in approving the plans (no fault of the architect). As such it is only these days that we are working on a quote with a builder, also provided by Pro Compare.
A couple of months ago, during the rainy season, my roof developed a serious leak and I asked Pro Compare for a company that does roof repairs. They came up with some names in Gauteng, where I live, and indeed one of them came to my aid and fixed my roof in half-a-day.
As I am busy with the extension of my house, I will proceed with the installation of solar after the extensions are done. I have a list of installers from Pro Compare.

Despite this, I found my company's details on their website, presented in a manner that clearly tried to give the impression that we are affiliated with them, and that the person providing contact details would be provided with a quote from my company.

Predatory, dishonest and misrepresentative behaviour. Utterly unacceptable, particularly coming from a company that interacts with professionals, in an environment where trust is critical.
