Be careful and cancel subscription, before they ripp you off

Last year on 2nd June 2024 I signed up for a year of news with South China Morning Post, as sometimes their headlines news seemed interesting, nice angles.

I sign The Economist, and the FT, and of course read the BBC, and pay for TV use in UK, and the news for South China Morning Post became very not needed, and i completely forgotten that I had not stopped subscription

USD18 would not have been an issue, but on 6th May 2025 they sent me this email which fell on spam, and i never saw it - no other email about subscription email was sent.

then on 2nd June 2025 they charge me £92.91 (USD120) for another year! And I dont even use them havent used for ages

Ripp off, contacted them today 8th June when noticed this super high charge, and they hid themselves in their T&Cs

this is ultrageous! Just plain disonest and consumer protection should stop it, only it is in China!!! So we are not protected.

Steer right away!!! Be careful

Fraudulent subscription from SCMP

Receive constant spam from SCMP, all of which goes to spam folder. Until yesterday. Yesterday, I was billed $120 for a subscription I never signed up for. I don’t know how they got my VISA number. If I claim fraud with VISA, there is the hassle of starting a new card—so I am just going to eat the $120 theft.

Takeaway for others: If you are receiving email from SCMP, try to turn it off. Otherwise you may one day wake up to a $120 subscription charge you never ordered.

Moderation of SCMP website comments

The moderation of comments on the SCMP website is extremely biased, allowing it to become a hotbed of left wing radicalism and anti-Western commentary. Comments that seek to oppose such extreme views are often deleted and little is done to curb the abusive behaviour of some commentators. Complaints to the customer services team are either ignored or met with canned responses that do not address the problem.

I never subscribed to this service or…

I never subscribed to this service or signed up for emails. I have unsubscribed around 20 times and have tried to contact Customer Service, but they continue to blitz me with unwanted emails. If I find out that they have gotten into my bank account, then I will be filing charges.

Would not recommend

Keeps logging me out and when I go back in every morning I have to watch an ad even though I paid for a year's subscription.

Subscription scam. Don't buy this

The newspaper will automatically charge you on a second year renewal without notice. This is a subscription scam. The newspaper sends you hundreds of notification of news and everything into your junk box which you barely pay attention.
This renewal is automatic and non-refundable for one year. I called the customer support today to try to cancel my subscription as I received a congratulation email on my new subscription. The support staff (Richard N and his supervisor (Thomas K) read the clause xx in the Terms & Conditions to me saying they cannot cancel the charge and will discontinue my automatic renewal next year in 2024. This is such a scam. All they care is to charge you another year of fees and disregard the complaints. The humungus junk emails/notification continue to load into your emails everyday. I honestly take immediate action upon the congratulation email.
Overall speaking, subscription version does not remove the obtrusive ads, and the level of reporting is honestly not worth reading. That's the real reason for cancellation.
Good luck in finding a website to write a review on SCMP as they literally buy out most of the ads on your online search. Trustpilot is only place.

The subscription has no trial period…

The subscription has no trial period and is non-refundable, an unacceptable policy in 2022, and might look into the legality of this as most sellers are required to provide trials. Subscription does not remove the obtrusive ads, and the level of reporting is honestly not worth the price.
