The car was not nice, it had obviously re-painted panels. They used so much air freshener it made my eyes water. Charged me for insurance, then when I got a flat tire 4 miles from the office, they charged me for a new tire. I put the spare on myself. They then forged my signature on the damage report. Go with a known company that operates at the airport. Don’t be fooled by the low upfront price. I booked through Expedia, not realizing it was such a bad company.

I had one of the worst car rental experiences I’ve ever had with NU Car Rentals, and I would not recommend them to anyone.
First, they advertise themselves as an airport rental company, but they are not truly accessible like other airport rentals. They close at 7:00 PM and do not clearly communicate this upfront. I missed the 6:30 PM pickup window because I reasonably expected an airport-connected service to accommodate typical flight schedules. When I arrived, there was no support, no flexibility, and no attempt to make the situation right.
Customer service was extremely poor. The representative I interacted with, Neidi, was dismissive and unhelpful. There are no real on-site customer service agents—everything is handled virtually, and the staff present are primarily there to clean and hand off vehicles. When I asked basic, reasonable questions, I was repeatedly told, “I’m just doing my job,” without any explanation of policies. That is not customer service.
They also nickel-and-dime you at every turn. There is a $500 hold placed on your card, which is excessive—nearly the cost of the rental itself. On top of that, they have strict and unreasonable policies around drop-off times. Even returning the vehicle later on the same day can result in additional charges.
Another major issue is their insurance policy. Do not waste your money purchasing coverage through third parties like Priceline—they do not accept it if you are a local renter. In fact, if you do not use your own personal insurance, they will not rent to you at all. Even for out-of-state renters, they only accept coverage purchased directly through them. This is not clearly explained ahead of time and feels intentionally misleading.
To make matters worse, when I raised concerns about these issues, there was no effort to compensate, assist, or provide any form of resolution.
Overall, this company lacks transparency, customer care, and basic professionalism. I will never use NU Car Rentals again, and I strongly advise others to avoid them unless you want to deal with hidden policies, poor service, and unnecessary charges.

Horrible. Weird location. Poor airport shuttle management. Unexpected costs related to insurance. Had to show our insurance, and that wasn't communicated prior. Weird experience with the zoom interface. Just horrible. Never again.

I rented a car online. It was not clear the company was not at the airport. You wait for a shuttle to the office, 15 minutes away. We arrived at this practically abandoned building. There are no onsite employees. You Zoom call an employee who insists you purchase insurance. He was also very rude. "You didn't have to book with us". I canceled my reservation on the spot. Took the shuttle back to the airport and used Avis for less money and was not required to get insurance. Never again.

You speak to a person on a computer screen, They have you sign the agreement and you do not see it till you are done. There is no one in the building to help you. Just a very bad experience overall.
The shuttle drivers are the ONLY thing good about this company.

Avoid this company!! They are scammers!! Awful customer service, not helpful and very rude! They gave me a car that within hrs had low air in all tires and a totally flat tire! They offered no assistance and I incurred a tire replacement cost and uber costs and they did not reimburse!! On top of that, I waited a long time to check in and out and they will riddle you with hidden fees. They use bait and switch practices, major false advertising! I will never ever use them again! Shady company! The worst! I have never had such a bad experience and have rented lots of cars!

This is a scam they take you to a remote location and when you get there, they tell you that your reservation is no good and you have to make a new one at a lot more money!

This is truly the worst rental car service I have ever experienced. The check in process requires calling in a shuttle, going to a repurposed old bank and then is completely remote with no in person representative. You have to interface through a camera and computer screen remotely, scan all your documents (not typically required from any Other rental service) and sign forms you can’t see before you sign them. They charge you exorbitant prices for toll coverage and tried to give me a car that had obviously been in an accident and may not have been fit to drive. If you enjoy wasting time, jig saw puzzle and Easter egg hunts (the bad kind) to rent a car, then maybe this company is for you. Otherwise, don’t waste your time or money. If I could give negative stars I would.

I rented a vehicle from Nu in Charlotte NC. June 19 through June 22.
I was asked to provide a declaration page from my insurance which I did.
I was NOT told to bring a declaration page that showed "full coverage" or I would have brought one.
I was told by the NU agent that mine was not a "full coverage" policy and that North Carolina law requires it.
He said they could not accept it and that in order to rent a vehicle I would have to pay for your policy.
The office closes at 7pm. It was around 6:50pm.
I asked if the shuttle could take me back to the airport. I was told that they close at 7pm and it is not their concern.
Basically I was trapped there and scammed into buying an additional policy that I now have discovered is not law but a well conceived lie to trick renters into buying additional coverage.
I have found out now that rental car companies in North Carolina provide the minimum state-required liability insurance coverage.
I asked them to do the right thing and refund the $99.80 that I was charged for extra protection. They refused.
I have since found that there have been thousands of complaints just like mine regarding the same thing.

when i booked this reservation i thought it was a good deal, but to my suprise i learned real quickly that it was not. got to airport thinking the rental was located there, it was not then got to the rental office offsite and there was no know behind the counters to help you. the lady that was there was very rude and not friendly at all. upgraded my vehicle which i knew would cost a little more, but then i was informed that i could not drive into Tennessee if i were going to there would be a charge. then i was informed that if i went through any toll roads and did not purchase their TOLL package there is a 25.00 charge per toll payable to Nu car plus the cost of the toll that the state charges. then they also put a 500.00 dollar hold on my credit card which i thought was ridiculous. gas tank was not full and the car was dirty. i will never ever rent from this company ever again, they are very crooked and dishonest in their business Practices.

My car was canceled without any help or recourse. Simply please leave my office and some patronizing guy on a screen.
They will not allow travel outside of the Carolinas and Virginia. This was not advertised on Priceline or Expedia.

I booked my car via a travel agent, when I arrived they claimed that I had to purchase additional insurance, even though, on the agreement it states that the additional insurance is optional. The booking was non-refundable so I would have been out the money for the rental and without a car unless I purchased the insurance. Shuttle took over an hour to arrive even though they knew of my arrival and when I called they told me 15 minutes.

All of the good reviews are so fake. This place is the biggest scam and takes FOREVER to get a car. They up charge you every chance they get. Do not buy insurance online when booking bc they will make you buy it again. Nobody in person to help you either.

When we arrived at the airport we had to contact them to pick us up which took 15 minutes for a shuttle to arrive. Once we got on the shuttle everything was Great until we arrived at the location and that's when it started going down hill fast. For those of you that want a person to speak with about your rental, this is not for you or me ever again. They hide behind a monitor screen with us in an office type room. The person behind the monitor was extremely difficult to understand. When we finally got to the point of getting the car the person behind the monitor open a box compartment on the desk, inside was a key but for the wrong size car which I had previously reserved through Expedia. On the second attempt to open a box, there was no key in it. So the guy behind the monitor made a call the the location of which a lady greeted us and asked us to follow her so we did. She then said this is your car which was obviously had damage to the rear-end and trunk. I was so frustrated with the whole situation that I did a walk around the car and took several other pictures of damage. It doesn't stop there. My partner stared to reviewing the charges and found an additional $139 charge because I used a Debit card and a $500 deposit on my debit card of which both charges were immediately withdrawn. So we called the rental agency and they said they would open a case and I will here back from them in 1-2 days. It get's better! Once we get 20 miles down the road the "Check Engine" light comes on and I clear it and then I get a message to change oil and filter. Had to clear this message every time I got in the car. To top it all off when we returned the rental I asked to speak to a manager waited 10 minutes and finally said lets go get in the shuttle so we did. Unfortunately, upon entering the shuttle I hit my head on the door jam and sliced open my forehead which required some 1st Aid (Lucky for me my partner was a nurse). After getting cleaned up and bandaged we were ready to get on the shuttle upon entry I notice that the rubber molding covering the raw steel was not in place thus causing the injury. As for hearing back about the case I did 5/9/2025. Our rental was from 4/30 - 5/6. Hope this review will help others make better decisions than we did on this trip! We will NEVER RENT from NU !!

We had a TERRIBLE experience with this car rental company. After waiting over an hour for the shuttle and eventually paying for a cab to reach their office, we encountered unprofessionalism, rudeness, and incompetence. Consequently, we decided to cancel our reservation on the spot. Unfortunately, we did not receive our deposit back as promised. We regret not reading the reviews before this negative experience. Thankfully, we chose a reputable car rental company later that day and had a wonderful experience. Lesson learned!
