AirBnB can’t be trusted - ruined our vacation

We booked an Airbnb in Portugal described as being in a “very quiet neighbourhood”. In reality, it was located directly next to a busy multi-lane road with constant traffic noise. It was completely unlivable, and we had to leave after just two nights — even though we booked for six.

Despite clear evidence and documentation, Airbnb refused any refund, repeating the same scripted response: that the location was “visible before booking”. They ignored the fact that the listing was misleading and never acknowledged the host’s false claims. Our case was closed without proper review, and attempts to reopen it were shut down just as quickly.

We’ve always been loyal Airbnb users, but this experience — and the way it was handled — makes it impossible for us to trust the platform anymore.

Airbnb does not understand the…

Airbnb does not understand the challenges their hosts face. Instead of listening to the situation, they keep referring to policies and even threatening penalties when a host needs to cancel for legitimate reasons.

Their Smart Pricing fails to reflect the size, value, and facilities of a property. If I adjust the price manually, my listing becomes almost invisible because the comparison system shows smaller, less equipped places at cheaper rates, ignoring the real value.

I cannot keep providing services where I am forced to accommodate 5–6 guests for 1,300 NOK per night, including garage parking, full kitchen use, Wi-Fi, TV, multiple towels, and two queen-size beds, only for some guests to leave glowing reviews while others give 1 or 2 stars based on unrealistic expectations.

They use everything, including the garage, kitchen, six towels, and cooking facilities, and then leave garbage behind, yet still complain they did not get enough for the price. Enough is enough. Airbnb’s system does not support fair compensation or host well-being.

Artificial Insanity

I am a host. It's over 2 months that they hold the payments of 3 bookings. The assistance is inefficient, inadequate, frustrating: they ask for a document that I sent them several times, and every time they ask for the same thing as if I didn't send it. I think this service is managed by A.I. But beyond them there is an Artificial Insanity. I say this because don't want to think to a worse reason: holding the money you manage on behalf of someone else in my country is a crime

Airbnb is a scam portal

In general: The way Airbnb is built up now as a platform make you stay alone when you need help and scammers can really suck your bank account dry while on vacation. Seriously don’t use Airbnb, it is not safe the way it is constructed today.

What happened:

Me and my wife decided to try to spend a week in a flat in fuengirola center and paid 550 euro to stay, but then the host asked for 500 euro deposit outside of Airbnb and we canceled the stay.

Then we had 550 euro less on the account as we need to wait weeks for refund. This process also took a lot of time on the phone to organize with Airbnb customer "support".

Then later on the day we found on short notice a flat available the in the center with Christian as a host. There was a ton of rules in the description but at first it seemed like all is ok. After paying 500 euro to stay we asked for a parking spot that was in the description as available (really important as there are no normal parking in the area), which was denied, then it took a lot of time to get more info about how to check in after paying. Before more instructions we had to pay 120 euro for the 2 pets which we did, but each time we asked for more info it took time. Because of no parking and the long time it took to wait for general instructions of finding the location after paying I contacted Airbnb customer service, where an agent named Rhonda which after my explaining ensures she will fix the refund, but only if I cancel the stay myself and she will contact me soon. Then I don’t hear from her again and decide to reorder the same place for 500 euro again since I already paid for the cats (120 euro), then the host claimed that we needed to pay 60 euro for late check in (that he caused), then getting instructions at arrival we needed to pay extra deposit of 200 euro before being allowed to enter (with an electronic code). Next day when we went shopping cat food we returned to a closed door (wrong code) and unresponsive host. Then we called the police who opened the door (without breaking it (they used a plastic sheet) and the police then noticed the flat is full of surveillance equipment such as hidden cameras and microphones. Later the host tells Airbnb that we was denied to enter because we didn’t pay extra for the cats (but we did in the previous booking at the same place which we canceled because of Airbnb customer service instructions on the phone). After 30-40 calls with different Airbnb agent, where I had to explain all this over and over again we still haven’t gotten any refund (now 4 weeks later). However the host also accused me for breaking the door and wanted me to pay 1000 euro for that. So all in all about 550 + 500 + 120 + 500 + 60 + 200 + 1000 = 2930 euro went out of our account on a normal 5 days stay. And here is the fun part, Airbnb only partially refunded for the first canceled stay where we was asked to pay a deposit outside of Airbnb and partially from the last where the police opened the door. The rest of the money is gone because (I assume) Airbnb support doesn’t have the system to overturn or return any money from a strict cancellation policy where the guest is cancelling and neither any of the extra costs involved. This way scammers are allowed to stay on the platform and cause endless revenue for Airbnb while possibly renting out the impossible and surveilled place multiple times at the same time. All Airbnb needs is that there aren’t too many of these so that people stop using the platform at all. But you have been warned, if you want the best chance of a successful stay, rent a hotel room.

A NIGHTMARE

This Company is so bad. As an owner you have very few information on the guests, no copy of ID, no postal address once somebody want to book your property. Most of time there is no review as guests when they have a bad review register otherwise... they don't follow the identity of the guests ...they can register again and again... even if they are really bad!!!
You don't know who is coming in your property, you don't even have all the names of all the guests... so Airbnb just ask you to say "YES" to your guests without any informations. Once the booking is accepted, most of the time guests are reluctant to give more information , even just a copy of ID or the postal address. Also you don't have any contract signed by the guests, if you have pb with him, it's complicated to call Airbnb. By experience I called them one time when a guest did not come for check out and did not give back my keys... the answer of the call center was "I have to close this phone call because you don't give me the right 4 last digit of your bank account number" which BTW was right... I had my bank statement in front of me with the credit transaction AIRBNB...
Anyway no help at all from Airbnb , when you have a pb, don't count on them... no help at all... and they have the deposit ... so if you need to be reimburse of damages by the deposit ... just nothing, no contract, no deposit, no help from Airbnb. Very bad experience and so bad service from the inexistant "call center".I was obliged to change 2 lockers at my charge... 100$...
I must say also that the most of time Airbnb provides bad people who wants travel discreetly without giving their ID and basic information about them. I had several guests visited by several prostitutes ( you always learn that later...). This never happened before with other websites... Airbnb does not care, they manage the payment and the deposit and you just have to shut your mouth...
If you don't want have pb, or you care your home, believe me avoid them...

Review integrity is unique @Airbnb. All pay per booking Airbnb competitors are scam operations or inadequate. Airbnb protects guests well.

Review integrity is unique @Airbnb. All pay per booking Airbnb competitors are scam operations or inadequate. Airbnb protects guests well.

This review applies to Airbnb US and HQ. However since many international guests use Airbnb when they travel in the US, this applies to them as well and the platform is the same around the world anyway.

Review integrity is unique at Airbnb, not only in its industry but also among all internet companies. This is a huge win for guests as any intelligent person who is risk averse will select a host with many good reviews and be fairly sure that they will get a good experience. This is because on average Airbnb reviews are very accurate. Possibly only Ebay can compare with Airbnb as far as Review integriy. Many other internet companies like Yelp and Tripadvisor cannot compare with Airbnb and pose severe risks to users and guests. From my experience Yelp and Tripadvisor are corrupt and unreliable and their reviews are junk on average and/or do not have the right people and right systems to handle what they try to sell to the public.

Airbnb invests massive resources and very smart and nice people to ensure the integrity and accuracy of reviews. They keep improving although there is still room for improvement. I would like to see Airbnb add star reviews for guests too not just hosts; similarly to what Ebay does where both buyers and sellers are star rated (not just description rated). This would ensure that each Airbnb transaction is smooth for both guests and hosts and that Airbnb would succeed even more.

Airbnb has no competition; all its competitors do not have the resources, ethics, integrity, people and systems that Airbnb has. In fact some of Airbnb competitors, including well recognized names such as Tripadvisor, are essentially scam operations. I am not familiar with VBRO and other non pay per booking operations so I cannot rate them but if VBRO and other were smart they would switch to a pay per booking model so that hosts do not have to pay a huge fee upfront.

In essence many of the recent reviews of angry guests about Airbnb are either fake or the guests did not take the appropriate precautions such as choosing a host with many positive reviews so they get what they ask for.

Another area of improvement for Airbnb would be adding the ability for hosts to include special amenities such as indoor pool vs outdoor pool, private garage etc because many guests do actively look for special amenities but the current Airbnb menu does not allow for that search while many of Airbnb competitors do allow more options in search.

Airbnb has made huge improvements recently. I had an old Truspilot review of Airbnb with 2 stars
