Onboarded, verified, and operating normally… then out of the blue: “outside our risk appetite.” No policy references, no screening hits cited, no meaningful explanation, and no workable appeal path. Our business is straightforward B2B advisory clients pay for consultations and fixed retainers; we pay for SEO/marketing to win those clients. No crypto, no gambling, no restricted goods, no client fund custody. The model hasn’t changed since day one.
Operational impact was real: disrupted billing and wasted time chasing a generic compliance line. If you value continuity, don’t make this your primary account. Keep a backup with a bank or PSP that can evidence decisions and cite the exact policy sections they’re applying. Opaque, unpredictable, and not business-friendly. Don’t bother.

This has been by far the WORST experience I have ever had with a financial services company. I applied to open an account with Sokin (Plata Capital Ltd, UK registered). My application was rejected, yet they still REFUSE to delete my personal and corporate data, including my PASSPORT copy and highly sensitive KYC documents.
They are hiding behind excuses about “Canadian AML law” when in reality they clearly operate under a UK company (Plata Capital Ltd, registered in England & Wales). Their website and emails show UK details, but when it comes to deleting your data, suddenly they claim Canadian rules apply. This is a complete contradiction and totally misleading.
The entire onboarding process was bureaucratic, outdated, and intrusive. They asked bizarre and unnecessary questions that go far beyond normal financial compliance, including where you were born, they just missed to ask the names of father, mother, wife, etc. It felt more like applying for a loan or being interrogated by an intelligence agency than simply trying to open an account. For a company that claims to be modern, this is absolutely alarming.
I have worked with financial institutions for over 20 years and run a business in the financial industry myself, and I have NEVER seen a process like this. It honestly feels more like a data-collection operation than a real service. The way they collect such excessive personal information without clear justification, and then refuse to delete it, is not only unethical but potentially dangerous...
This raises serious red flags. With this kind of behaviour, what stops them from misusing or even weaponising your personal data later on?
If you value your personal privacy and security, stay FAR AWAY from Sokin. Financial firms should respect compliance and transparency, this company has shown the exact opposite: dodgy, untrustworthy, intrusive, and potentially in breach of data protection laws.
Avoid at all costs.
