Shockingly hopeless. Stress inducing, incompetent and wouldn't know a plastic surgeon from their own anal sphincter. Called the central booking line to book a consultation for a particular procedure at the Fitzwilliam hospital. However got there only to be told that he doesn't do that type of procedure but would refer me to hospitals in ma area that do. After two weeks nothing was sent, no price list, no appointment times. Nothing. Called their line again who said that there is another doctor at the Fitzwilliam that does do the particular surgery I'm after. When I eventually spoke to Fitzwilliam directly they said that surgeon doesn't even work in that field. Decided to cut my losses with them and arrange an appointment at ashtead hospital where they do do the procedure only to never get an appointment confirmation email and had to keep chasing them for it. They still didn't send it and after 150 mile drive down to ashtead, I checked in for my appointment 45 minutes early only to wait an additional hour to be told that the doctor who was going to see me has gone home. It wasn't until 1pm I was told that he would come back at 6 pm and see me. Absolutely shocking service. I'm a fee paying private patient
78 year old patient had spinal haematoma after surgery and was left for 20 hours before it was washed out ...the result is life changing spinal injury and loss nearly all mobility. A total clinical disgrace. Newhall hospital should be ashamed and doing all everything possible to correct this but they washed their hands.
Would I recommend the Fitzwilliam Peterborough – absolutely not.
The aftercare following my operation was dire. I had surgery on 3 November and despite my admission notes saying I needed TED stockings, none were provided. So, to clarify this, the nurse that walked me to theatre didn’t question why I wasn’t wearing them, nor did the nurse in theatre. Following the operation, I was taken back to my room and no comment was made about wearing stockings to prevent a DVT. I spent two nights in the hospital and at no point did a nurse mention the TED stockings. Even at the point of discharge they weren’t offered until my wife insisted they issued them.
On my second night, I called the nurse and told her my catheter was blocked and I was in agony She insisted it wasn’t even though I was almost in tears. I told her to fetch another nurse who came in, took one look and fetched the doctor who unblocked it
Two weeks after my operation if felt like I had gone into retention so I called the hospital and went in. I was shoved in a side room and had to wait for a nurse who didn’t carry out any Obs, just checked me with the bladder scanner, told me it looked okay and said I didn’t need any antibiotics and sent me away. 48 hours later I had a raging UTI that my GP had to sort out.
I spoke to the hospital about this and said I deserved some recompense which they said they would consider. Despite writing twice more, they have completely ignored my request and now don’t even respond to emails.
In summary, the Fitzwilliam is driven by profit, not patient satisfaction. I certainly would never use them again, nor would I ever recommend them
This review is about the care I received, not the surgeon, who did a brilliant job
Referred to the Oaks Hospital in Colchester to see an Orthopaedic consultant. That was on July 16th 2025 - it's now 6 months later and I haven't heard anything from the Hospital or the Ramsay Group. At least 3 emails have gone unanswered. As many other reviewers have mentioned: Customer Service is non-existent.
Emailed an enquiry, explaining my condition and the impossibility of getting an NHS GP appointment at my surgery. They referred me to a consultant, appointment made, fantastic! Appointment then had to be cancelled 2 days before because I didn't have an NHS GP referral! So much for private health care 🤦♀️
I had a hernia repair in January 2023.
The surgeon abandoned pre-op exams 10 years earlier preferring to leave diligence to chance hoping he would be long gone by the time to problem catch up.
This is a breach of the manufacturers instructions for the repair mesh which is a class three medical device. Governed by the medical device regulations, class three devices do require compliance with the manufacturers instructions. Breaches of these regulations maybe prosicuted as a criminal offense.
By reducing the pre-op to just 3 minutes a lot of important details were missed. In my case I didn't have a conventional inguinal hernia, but a traumatic hernia caused by a direct handlebar impact 27 years prior. The significance of this is that it's 6cm out of position.
Unfortunately New Hall and the wider Ramsay Healthcare are the kind of bog basic one trick pony kind of hernia surgeons who you should never be let loose on patients. For those considering hernia surgery, a skilled surgeon will have many repair techniques and meshes in their toolbox. They will understand that each mesh and technique is only viable in its niche. The surgeons who practice a one size fits all approach really shouldn't be trusted.
In the case of Ramsay health care they specialized in the use of 3d max mesh. They still refuse to disclose that possessed them to use the Medtronic dextile mesh on me.
During the surgery, it was obvious with hindsight that my hernia was out of position and in a case of pressonititis, the surgeon elected to continue with a procedure that he should have abandoned to obtain enhanced consent for.
His solution was to take a right hand anatomically shaped mesh and place it centrally to provide equal left and right coverage. 90% of the mesh was used to reinforce good tissue. Only 10% of the mesh performed any useful function.
Predictably the repair and demonstrably failed within a few weeks and I was then refered back to the original surgery team.
Unfortunately rather than take the initiative and quietly fix their defective surgery, they chose to fabricate the scan results required to justify a diagnostic laparoscopy. The used this to introduce entirely false diagnostic opinions that they beloved no one would challenge. The NHS is always reluctant perform repeat examinations. But if you fight hard enough and for long enough, in my case 20 months, examinations can be repeated.
The second referral was taken over by Ramsay's then group medical director who claimed nothing was wrong with the original surgery. He then fabricated a spermatic cord lipoma finding which he claimed to have removed, but kept no images or obtained a biopsy. Bizarrely he then claimed I could immediately return to my normal activities. He didn't even recommend 24 hours for the general anesthetic to wear off.
He then wrote to my GP and myself trying to obstruct further examinations and second opinions.
The results of the exam 20 months later still haven't properly been disclosed. They gave answers for different questions to the ones I asked, eventually resorting to the most convincing defence of them all. No comment was their answer to a 20+ page formal complaint.
The images provided for the laparoscopy have been so heavily darkened it looks like they forgot to remove their lens caps. They claimed this is the best quality they can print. They refuse to send them by email.
They're now under investigation by the ombudsman, I now have the MRI scan results demonstrating what they were covering up and I'm on the waiting list for a replacement diagnostic laparoscopy to provide the replacement images.
I'm not sure how many other hospitals could subject patients to two unneccessary surgeries to obtain the information that should have been documented from the first.
Tammy at the rivers is the best! Super funny tells great stories and puts you at ease! X
I was admitted on the 12th November for A TURP Procedure, from Pre Op. through to Post Op. and ongoing aftercare until discharge on the 14th November, I received informative, great care, especially as I was unable to get out of bed, alongside this the Anaesthetist and the Consultant carrying out my procedure were good at keeping me informed, especially the consultant who visited me several times, and also rang me at home on the 15th November, I have no issues in recommending this hospital at all.
Had a consultation with a consultant and was told before this would cost me £200.00 I then agreed to an endescope procedure that the consultant told me would be about £1000.00, the day of the procedure was booked and the they sent me a invoice to pay, the consultants fee was a lot more and the procedure was a lot more altogether £2200.00 compare to £1200.00 that I was told so I have had to cancel it, very dishonest to try a trick like this on people who are ill
I had a hernia operation however from the time of the consultation to the actual operation was longer than indicated and I had to chase. No big issue and the operation went ahead. Afterwards I had a lot of pain and after a while I arranged to see the consultant again. By the time I saw him the pain had eased significantly and all was progressing. Even though I had a follow up appointment booked in 6 weeks time they discharged me from their care stating to my GP that I was fully healed and pain free. This was and is not the case and now I am left in limbo and still in a fair amount of pain and not sure who to speak to if needed,
I had a caudal epidural steroid injection for sciatica. I had it done privately to avoid a 3 month wait. I couldn't have had a better experience at the Rivers Hospital, Sawbridgeworth. The Day Case unit is beautiful, the nurses were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The procedure by Mr. Gul was quick and efficient, everyone seemed very competent, and the steroids had started working by the next day. It was worth the money, the cost includes a follow-up appointment and physiotherapy.

I was supposed to be having an endoscopy with Dr Richard Keld tomorrow November 4th at Buckshaw hospital.
I spoke to the department in early October and was told to expect a letter of appt confirming date and time.
It didn't arrive.
Phoned, to be told my details weren't even in the system, despite having had a consultation in June with Dr Keld!
We pay privately ourselves for all appointments and procedures ( quite a few being in our seventies)
I wouldn't touch Ramsay healthcare with a barge pole quite frankly.
Dr Keld I recommend that you decamp to another private healthcare provider - this shower don't know what they're doing.
Appalling is actually too flattering a word.
To sum this review up for those that don't want to read below:
This care provider and their contracted consultants fail to adhere to NHS guidelines of informed consent, repeatedly fail to provide your consultations to your GP in a reasonable time thus delaying treatment. They also do not seem to care when very serious complaints are raised to them. They offer their assistance but then when you try to take that - they refuse outright to help further.
Please take your care elsewhere - just the added stress of dealing with this provider will negatively impact your health!
This has been a horrendous experience over the course of around 16 months.
From initial referral to consultation was a quick process. I did not have the best of experiences with my first consultant who would not inform me about alternative options to surgery despite being asked very clearly "what are my alternatives" his response was "You can either have the surgery or we can close the referral and you can be referred for surgery later"...
How is someone supposed to make an informed choice if the specialist consultants refuse to help the patient make this choice?
Due to issues at the pre-op I am not passed to surgery (which was for a few days later) and this, frankly, gave me relief knowing I had time to gather my thoughts and re-evaluate.
I am given another consultant who, while much better, proved problematic too. He gave me more information but told me outright the hospital was not an appropriate place for my surgery due to cardiological issues but said other consultants at the hospital may consider me for a general anesthetic.
I reached out the the bookings team and tried to get this all resolved. I waited an entire month for this second consultant letter to arrive at my GP so I could move my care elsewhere where Ramsay said they would support and transfer my care somewhere appropriate.
They, however, failed to do this and it took four weeks to receive a draft copy of my consultant letter. They told me they could move me to a hospital near by that could do it but couldn't guarantee I wouldn't see the two previous consultants and given my experiences so far I wanted a fresh slate with a new consultant.
They then refused to provide any help or support. I still had not had my letter to my GP. I went up to the hospital and asked for this to finally be resovled after this insanely long ordeal to which the most senior nurse on shift was very helpful at first, then when I said that I was not going to leave until I had a for proper resolution to my issue today they decided to escalate this and call the police.
I will say other than the above mentioned that the nurses on site are incredibly compassionate people and very understanding.
It is also worth noting I have raised the complaints to them directly and to be blunt - they do not care despite the first consultant and second consultant riding the edge of the NHS' consent definitions. By the NHS definition for consent to be valid the patient must have the capacity, be informed (given all the information about what treatment involves, benefits, risks and reasonable alternatives along with what could happen if treatment does not go ahead) and it must be voluntarily given. It cannot be under pressure by staff, family or friends.
If you want to risk your health under this provider then do so at your own risk. It's worth nothing complaints had been raised through emails, person and telephone calls throughout this.
It was not a hidden issue or only mentioned to one person which could indicate that this is a normal level of care to expect from Ramsay hospitals.
I have been to Fulwood hall hospital a few times now. The staff are very helpful and organised. The car park is too small.
My review of Woodthorpe Private Hospital Mansfield Road Nottinghm
As soon as I drove into the car park I had my reservations, parking was horrendous, the car park was full and the spaces were small if your a large person or have disabilities you will struggle to exit your vehicle. It took me 10 mins to find a suitable parking bay, which i had to exit my vehicle "sideways. "
On entering the hospital, it looked small and confined. I spoke to the reception staff who were helpful and kind they explained where I should go
I arrived 10 mins early, which I thought was suitable and polite. On entering what I thought was the private wing I was booked in to see my specialist consultant, which cost. £250 I was told to wait in this small waiting room along with 5 other people, which seemed strange for a private hosipatal/wing.it looked more like a dentist waiting room. I waited 10 mins pass my allocated time, and asked one of the nurses, why my appointment which I was paying for, was late, she stated the doctor had a patient still inside his consultation room I explained to the nurse that I was not happy that I had paid 250 for a appointment and it was late . I told her the NHS could give me a delayed appointment, and that "was free." The whole idea of going private and paying is because you want a professional, polite service. This hospital was lacking on both counts
I waited another 10 mins when the doctor appeared and stated he was still dealing with a previous patient. I reminded him it was now 20 mins late he had a carefree attitude and did not seemed bothered that I had travelled for 90 mins to see him...in fact he was laughing with other staff members he was wearing rubber gloves and asking staff for some lube. So he could deal with the patient inside his consultation room. I thought his actions were totally unprofessional and embarrassing. After this, I went back to reception where there were no staff available to speak to.
I waited for a few minutes then a nurse appeared and asked to speak to the duty manager or head supervisor so I could make a complaint about the lateness.she informed me the person I needed to speak to was not available due to assisting with another operation of a patient and would be delayed . I was not prepared to wait any longer. It was a total sxxt show worse than any NHS or private hospital I had visited before. They wanted nearly 7 grand for an operation and consultation, which I was not prepared to go ahead with.
I did speak to Jenny Customer Advisor , who apologised again and stated I should not have been treated so badly. I said it was too late and would be making a complaint to their head office and give this location a terrible review..
Anyone thinking of going here and spending your hard earned savings
Don't there are better private hospitals elsewhere ..where you will get what you. Pay for, a polite, professional, great service from nurses and doctors
Which was totally lacking here ..

I have lost a large amount of weight following bariatric surgery at Ramsay in Reading where I received outstanding care. 18 months on & I needed an unrelated hernia repair that was significant & wanted to have abdominoplasty (fleur de lys) & breast reduction at the same time due to excess skin from my weight loss. I contacted Reshape & Restore & saw Mr Khan at Ramsay at the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester. From the initial consultation through to the aftercare this company & hospital have been OUTSTANDING. The process, the care and the facilities are faultless. There are far too many people to thank individually so I’ll just say the Mr Khan, Mr Chapman & the entire team are EXCELLENT. I trust this entire team completely and the aftercare is BRILLIANT - the nurses are so knowledgeable, kind & the team makes you feel very comfortable. Prices are reasonable & going via Reshape & Restore I felt so confident in Mr Khan and had my operation locally to me. The results are looking fab! I cannot recommend this team enough. They are outstanding & if you’re looking at these types of procedures or others then talk to this team. You won’t find better in my opinion.
My son has been receiving neurological care through Ramsay Health Care. Following a recent seizure and hospitalisation, we were unable to get any response from his neurologist for over 20 days, despite multiple polite emails and phone calls.
After I raised concerns about the lack of continuity of care, the neurologist abruptly withdrew from my son’s treatment without warning or any onward referral, and has since refused all further communication. We have also been accused of harassment, despite our correspondence being entirely courteous and limited to seeking essential medical information. To make matters worse, Ramsay Health Care has now threatened to involve debt collectors over a bill that isn’t yet due.
Based on this experience, I would strongly advise against using Ramsay Health Care for neurological services.
As a BUPA patient and having experienced Nuffield hospitals we were very disappointed with The Oaks in Colchester. The Consultant was great, however the stay on the ward no so good. The room was freezing, they eventually brought along a fan heater. I went onto X and posted about the heating and the marketing guy, who also brought my partner back from theatre!! got the heating going. There was no shower hose on the shower, they wanted to discharge my partner too early as he was in so much pain and could not walk after his back op. I think the problem with the Oaks is it is used too much by the NHS and you do not get the private health experience you get with the Nuffield

Appalling care at Spring Wood Lodge Elysium. NHS funded bed, very poor value for money. Profit over care.
Zero understanding of autism, poor risk assessments, consultant lied, psychology provision chaotic/ poor from Dr Malinder Bhullar, who treated patient and carer terribly, name called carer and lied to complaints investigation. In other words totally unprofessional.
Complaints process ineffective. Quazi Haque, Elysium's Chief Medical Officer, not bothered/ failed to act when said appalling care was reported.
Poor reply from Ramsay Health Care UK below. I already stated that Elysium's complaints process is ineffective. Elysium is part of the Ramsay Health Care Group, so perhaps you should be interested in appalling care provided at Elysium?

The admissions forms to access an NHS referral are repetitive, messy and poorly thought out. They ask for repeated entry, across multiple forms, of the same information leading to a potential for errors and definite customer frustration.
The system needs to be more customer centered and joined-up.
