Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 72 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently struggle with unhelpful customer support, delayed payments, and ongoing difficulties accessing their funds when needed. People also mention constant issues regarding sudden card declines, unexpectedly locked accounts, and unreturned phone calls from representatives who are unable to provide clear answers. Some reviewers were not happy with unexpected account fees and rigid transfer rules when trying to move money to other institutions. Consumers note that attempting to resolve these administrative hurdles often results in excessive hold times, unhelpful communications, and general frustration during every single interaction with the support staff.

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. I got an HSA to save up for future medical expenses. HSA Bank seemed good a couple years ago. Then they started adding fees. They misapplied fees causing my investments to be liquidated. They credited my account later, but of course did not credit the investment losses incurred by the sale and subsequent repurchase. Finally moved my HSA to Fidelity, and I recommend others to do the same. $25 accoutn closure fee. Good riddance, HSA Bank!

DO NOT USE for HSAs!

Was switched to HSA Bank by employer, got several different cards within the few years time period, and the additional person on my account was unable to use any of them. I was going to close/transfer the account, but had a small balance and just figured I would use it to cover small things. Hadn't checked my balance in a while, but should've had about $75 in it, which I was going to use to pay a medication bill, but when I actually logged in, I only had $12 left because they had been charging me $2.50/month for at least the last year (no previous service charges). Had to call to close the account, and was told that I could have the fees reversed if I kept the account open. I said no, just close the damn account because I'm sick of dealing with it, and they told me it was $25 just to close the account! What a freaking rip off! I was granted a "one time exception" to close it for the money in the account and no additional balance due - how very generous of them! I didn't like the account when I was switched to it, and I certainly wouldn't ever use or recommend them now. Any employer that chooses to use this bank for HSAs does not care about its employees.

Horrible Fraud Department - Please read, they have no Clue.

I moved and signed into my account with the 2 part authentication as I have done hundreds of times before. Changed my address as I should like I did with all my other cards. This bank put a hold on my account, did not contact me and then decline a monthly purchase that I have had for years. $7.35 cost, if they thought is was fraud after I logged in and changed my address they should have contacted me. Instead wait for two weeks when I went to use the card and decline me saying it had zero funds. I have never been declined in my 50 years of life and have over $6k in my account and got declined. Their business practices are terrible at best. Any other card you have would have called or texted and asked if that was you. Like I said same prescription for years. If it would have been fraudulent don't you think they would have tried to get more then my monthly cost I spend every month? Makes zero sense. Oh, they also lock you out of your online account so you have to call them. Worst customer service ever, same URL I have used for years also. So, they flagged fraudulent after I log in, confirm with a code with text, use the same URL, bought the same prescription, on the same card, for the same small monthly amount and they say may be fraud. Yeah because that makes zero sense. Unbelievable.

Garbage Company

Garbage company. Was forcefully switched to them when insurance provider changed through work. Unless you have thousands of dollars in your account you are charged fees monthly, for what? Old HSA never charged any fees. Pull your money out ASAP before they continue to steal it.

I am submitting this complaint due to a…

I am submitting this complaint due to a very bad experience with HSA Bank and its transaction protocol. In my personal opinion, I do not recommend this bank for HSA services.
Even though I had $1,250.00 available in my HSA account, the card did not allow me to pay my medical expenses directly. The purpose of an HSA card is to pay for authorized medical bills or approved medications at the point of service. All transactions should appear immediately or be authorized in real time.
However, instead of the card working as expected, I was forced to pay out of pocket first, even though the funds were available on the HSA card. Later, the transaction appeared in the HSA system, but only after I had already paid out‑of‑pocket.
I cannot understand why I needed to use my personal money when the HSA card had sufficient funds and the purchase was a legitimate medical expense. This situation caused confusion, financial stress, and a lack of trust in HSA Bank’s transaction protocol.
In my opinion, this reflects Poor transaction authorization
Incorrect or delayed processing
Failure to recognize eligible medical charges
Lack of transparency and reliability

Find a different health savings company…

They randomly changed their withdrawal policy to $50 a day without notification, which sucks because their card doesn't work at half or more of the places that I need it. That includes my doctors office and pharmacy. If your crappy cars isn't going to work and you have zero functional tools on your website and app, at least don't make it difficult for me to withdraw money to pay for medical expenses

Do NOT use HSA Bank, a nightmare for eligible claims

If you are an employer, PLEASE DO NOT use HSA Bank. Mine switched from HealthEquity and it's been a nightmare. I'm pregnant and postpartum now and I've had to fight and re-submit claims for basics like breastpumps because HSABank is fast to reject without reviewing. I had to go through my HR/Benefits person to communicate with HSABank to allow eligilbe expenses because their reviewers kept rejecting clearly itemized receipts related to pregnancy expenses allowable by the IRS. RUN AWAY FROM HSABANK.

I wish I could give -5 stars

If I could give them negative stars I could. HSA bank is pretty awful. First off the fees, their fees are horrendous from the account maintenance fees with smaller cash balances to the account closure fee it's all bad. Their web portal is terrible, confusing, sometimes broken and their move away from their schwab (TDAmeritrade) partnership for investing was awful. They should not be in business tbh, it's about as close to a scam bank as you can get without being an actual scam. As soon as mine became no longer actively be contributed to I ported it to Fidelity to get rid of them. They make everything with regards to getting away from them horrible difficult to. They are the epitome of terrible service and hostile business practices.

Incompetent

We’re writing to inform you of an issue that affected your HSA Invest Choice account.

As previously communicated, starting on July 1, 2026, the 0.10% annual (0.025% per quarter) Choice investment fee will be assessed quarterly with the first charge occurring on Oct. 14, 2026. Due to a processing error, this fee was applied on July 15, 2026, before its intended effective date.

To cover the fee, a portion of your largest investment holding was liquidated. Between July 24 and July 31, the fee was reversed, and the shares that were sold as a result of the fee deduction were purchased at fair market value. Your account now reflects the holdings that existed before the transaction occurred.

Details of these transactions will be available in your July statement, which will be posted by mid‑August. View your statement in your online account by navigating to Manage Investments, Investment Summary, Choice then Documents.

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may have caused.

As an Employer

As an Employer, this benefit is not good. My employee's are unhappy with the results of the offering. The complaints focus on poor customer service, the lack of investment options, and inability to redirect dividends to cash.

HSA Bank and its website are severely…

HSA Bank and its website are severely substandard. The website is difficult to navigate and understand. Their funds transfer process takes several days in a world where such transactions regularly settle immediately in other financial situations. During these transfers, the funds disappear completely from the website presentation which creates concern about where the money went. I recommend not using HSA Bank. I am in the process of moving to another HSA provider. If someone from HSA Bank wants to take the time to better understand my experience so that other customers can benefit from that learning, they can email me to setup a time to talk at unsjgtbz5 followed by @mozmail.com.

Id say 0 stars if I could

Id say 0 stars if I could. Absolutely garbage customer service from obvious foreign call centers that you can't understand. If you dont upload receipts right away they lock your card and make it impossible to challenge. Honestly would rather eat the taxes and keep my money in an account I have actual control of at this point. These people will find any reason to deny your claim and make you pay them back.

Had an account for several years there

Had an account for several years there. They discontinued using schwab and it is a nightmare getting the funds transferred to the new custodian. Made 4 individual phone calls each time the employees were uneducated or my other guess that they just want to prolong the transfer and make additional interest. I would have rated it lower but there were no negative ratings.****** Run away dont walk

AI/ is impossible

They accept you money, send out a M/C card and then make it impossible to activate, as time goes on it is buried in AI so it is impossible to speek to an actual person. it is designed to create anger, and cause to give up in walk away from your money owed.

Can't buy prenatal's because they are not on the IRS list

I was attempting to buy prenatal vitamins online for my wife and the card kept getting declined.
When I called the Service line I was informed that the IRS does not specifically list prenatals or vitamins on the list that it is not covered.
I can get a written note from my wifes doctor saying that she needs these vitamins and then submit it for review.
If they then deem it appropriate then they will reimburse me for the funds.

I've been over 6 months trying to move my own money out of HSA Bank, I've filled out 4 different forms. Everytime I do, they come back saying something was wrong or I need to do it a different way. Honestly the worst and most frustrating company I've ever encountered.

The absolute worst customer service I've ever seen

I don't recommend HSA Bank at all. If you change your address because you move or for any other reason, they will lock up access to your account. Your HSA benefits card will get declined, your login access will be locked out and you will only have access to their support center via phone. They apparently only use off shore call centers and often hard to understand them completely. When you call in, you will be told "their fraud department is reviewing the account, please call back in 2 to 4 business days". You wait, call back only to receive the same response time after time. This can drag on for months. They shouldn't even be in business in my opinion.

Terrible Customer Service. Plan on hours on the phone if you have an issue

I was referred to this bank by someone and boy I wish I had been here first. My bad. First of all, it's owned by a foreign company if you didn't know. Your money is in foreign accounts with a company is Spain (do your research and dig, it's a company owned by a company). You get the picture.

The customer service is terrible. I thankfully was able to open an account with lively which is US owned and get money into before the tax time because I couldn't deposit money in HSA Bank.

I still have not been able to log into my account. I was never able to confirm my email. It's a huge mess and I am sure that I am going to lose money when I attempt to close the account that I can't access.

I have spent hours with the customer service on the phone trying to get my account unlocked. They say they needed paperwork from me, which I provided and they said they have not received it.

I have not been able to close my account nor has my spouse. Thankfully, we only have $200 dollars between us. Miraculously, my spouse was able to spend the $200 dollars for some glasses, so we are going to have no money there at all. Hurray!

Check out Lively or Fidelity. I wish I had done more research. I had no idea it would be such a mess. Bad on me for not checking. Trust pilot is a great place to start. I should have known better. Do not use this company. There are better ones out there.
