I became a new member of Delcampe and Hoo Boy!
I became a new member of Delcampe and one day later had my account closed by them. What a nightmare! Let me tell you about it.
Delcampe is a website for sellers to sell stamps and where buyers can make purchases. So I create an account and decide to make my first purchase. I found 100 stamps being individually offered by a seller at a price I was happy to pay. The total came to 4.97 Euro, meaning just under 0.05 per stamp on average. What a good deal!
From my cart I hit purchase, and then saw the total was going to be just over 30 Euros, and then on top of that I was going to need to pay the seller’s reasonable shipping charges, something like 3 Euros. How did this happen? I looked around and saw that the website wanted to charge me over 25 Euros in something it calls “platform fees.”
Of course there was no way I was going through with that deal. So I explained in a message to the seller that I was new to the site, that I had no idea platform fees would be so excessive, would he please cancel the transaction. The seller did, and in the process left me 100 individual negative ratings for each transaction. Imagine starting your eBay account with 100 negatives on it! You would need 100 positive transactions after that just to get to 50%!
The website provided me an opportunity to rate the transaction as well. I must say, it was a rather negative experience. So I in turn rated the seller with 100 negative ratings. The next morning I wake up to find a nasty email from Delcampe’s administrators saying they had reviewed my activity on their website and were closing my account. They added that I had better not try reopening one under another name either. As if!
So is this Delcampe’s idea of customer service? Obviously something had gone wrong. Did they ask me for my side, for my feedback regarding my experience. No. They just protected their abusive seller and summarily closed the account of a potentially lucrative new and well-intentioned customer. I buy a lot of stamps. Their sellers lost out on a lot of potential sales. What kind of a business model is this?
First, I can’t figure out what kind of customer could possibly benefit by using Delcampe’s service. Over 95% of world stamps are inexpensive, valued at 0.12 Euro or less. If a seller sells one for 0.05 and the site adds a 0.30 fee on each stamp sale, clearly this benefits only Delcampe.
Maybe the site is geared towards high-end users. Let’s say a seller is selling a 50 Euro stamp for 20, and the site adds a 0.30 platform fee to the sale. Then clearly purchasing this stamp could benefit the buyer. The main problem is that the stamp in question since it’s high end is more likely than not a forgery. Don’t take my word for it, ask Google AI how many forgeries exist for any high-end stamp. They can usually even name the persons who made the most forgeries of any given stamp in question. Delcampe does not offer any authentication services. So it’s high-end buyer beware. I’m not saying the seller forged the stamp either. Probably the seller bought the stamp years ago never realizing it was a forgery, and now having grown older decides it’s time to sell the stamp and is doing so with the best of intentions.
So what customer can benefit from Delcampe’s service? Neither the low-end quantity buyer nor the high-end forgery purchaser gets a good deal. Given that Delcampe by all logic should therefore have no customer base, they shouldn’t be able to exist given their business model. Something clearly isn’t right with this entire situation! If you decide to do business with them, I urge you to use extreme caution. They sound like scammers to me. I am just glad I did not give them any of my financial information before they closed my account. Something’s really off here.
A new world of collectables!
I have been using Delcampe since 2011. In that time I've found it easy to navigate as the ability to translate from any language to another, the easy financial transactions and the overall high quality of the items, and not to forget the friendliness of the sellers, make it a great site from which to buy the item(s) you're after. As I live in Australia, Delcampe provides a whole new world of things to add to my collections and I love it!
