  1. Payroll Service

Written by the company

SurePayroll® By Paychex is online payroll software for small business owners, household employers, and accountants who run payroll for clients. It’s built for the owner paying themselves, the owner making a first hire, and every hire after that. SurePayroll is a Paychex company. Paychex, Inc. is one of the largest payroll and HR companies in the United States, and SurePayroll is purpose-built for small business: the payroll capability owners need, without the enterprise features they’d never use. The full-service plan calculates, deposits, and files federal, state, and local payroll taxes on the plan’s schedule. The owner previews and approves every payroll before it processes. • Federal and state filings the plan covers, including Forms 940 and 941, W-2, and 1099-NEC • Unlimited payroll runs, with two-day direct deposit included and next-day available for an additional fee • Auto Payroll: an owner-controlled setting that runs recurring payroll from saved pay details, with a notification before each run • Household payroll with Schedule H support for families employing a nanny, caregiver, or household staff • Mobile app for iOS and Android, plus an employee self-service portal for pay stubs and tax forms For accountants and bookkeeping firms, SurePayroll offers wholesale pricing, a white-label option, and read-only client access. SurePayroll specialists are available by phone and chat during business hours, and setup support is included with every plan. Owners approve each payroll, see each filing the plan covers and when it was submitted, and keep the record in one place.

Long time customer

Long time customer. I am a software developer and have my own product company. As a software, subscription owner, I would describe SurePayroll as the 50 year old car with a new paint job. Looks fine but runs when it wants. If you want to pay the average cost for below average performance. This is good for you.

My experience during the first month…

My experience during the first month was not good; the system, the correct payroll processing dates, and the applicable fees were not adequately explained to me. Furthermore:
1. When I signed up for the service, I was told they had Spanish-speaking staff. However, that is not the case—or at least those who speak it do not answer the phone—and the service has been poor.
2. The payroll process was not explained to me correctly.
3. My account was blocked for five days.
All of this has caused me a great deal of stress.
I hope the situation improves moving forward so that we can continue working together.

I had an extremely disappointing…

I had an extremely disappointing experience with Shore Payroll and their representative, Jarett. I was charged multiple additional and hidden fees without my authorization or a clear explanation. They charge for practically everything, making the service extremely expensive.

Unfortunately, the customer service was also very poor. Numerous payroll mistakes were made, and those errors negatively affected my business and even caused me to lose clients. Instead of taking responsibility and correcting the problems promptly, I was billed additional fees related to their own mistakes.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Sure Payroll or Jarett. Business owners need a payroll provider that is accurate, transparent, responsive, and accountable and that was not my experience with this company.

Worst 401K Plan Ever through SurePayroll

High fees. NEVER NEVER NEVER get their Safe Harbor 401K plan. You can't get a representative on the phone and you are pretty much on your own. I have a small company and it has been a nightmare. Never again. Customer service sucks.

I have multiple companies with…

I have multiple companies with SurePayroll for payroll and I received notices from the IRS for none payment of June's payroll tax payment which then made me delinquent per the quarterly report. It wasn't for just one company, it was for both. I have another but didn't receive anything but I can't get a hold of anyone to find out if an issue with that one. The stress is unbelievable. When I spoke to someone at SurePayroll they said to upload the notices and it can take up to 30 days to review. Per the IRS, I had only a few days to make the required payment but SurePayroll already drafted from my bank account back in June. I shouldn't have to make it again to the IRS to appease the notice deadline because SurePayroll doesn't see the importance of the notices from the IRS. Then they also changed my address on the 941 reports for both companies. I'm so stress out....I regret the move to them. If I can give them no star I would.

Waste of time; no communication; poor customer services

I recently opened a new account with SurePayroll, and the initial setup appeared to be going well. Based on that experience, I began setting up the second of four accounts I planned to transfer. Unfortunately, the process has been extremely frustrating, and I am now reconsidering whether moving forward with SurePayroll is the right decision.I set up the new account on August 24, 2026.After a week without an update, I emailed the sales representative over the weekend to ask for the status. On Monday, August 31, 2026, I received an email stating that payroll had been approved.Within two minutes, I received another email stating, You did not approve your online payroll enrollment information displayed in SureCheck.I called the number listed in the email, but was told I had reached the wrong department and needed to contact Sales. I then left a message for the sales representative. After not hearing back from the sales representative, I called the Surepayroll. The representative instructed me to go online and make changes, but I could not get past the Verify that all information is correct page because the information displayed there was incorrect. When I tried to explain the issue, it did not seem that the representative understood the problem. Her proposed solution was to reset my password, even though I was already able to log in and the issue was that I could not proceed past the first page. I explained that resetting the password would not resolve the problem. When I asked for a supervisor and the representatives name, the call was ended. Later, I called the Surepayroll again and asked to speak with a supervisor. The person I reached would not transfer me, yet wanted to put a stop on all emails to me so Surepayroll could not contact me.
When I called again for a supervisor they left me on hold until they hung up on me. I have made numerous requests for a supervisor and no one is calling me back.
Day 8: My customer service rep was out the day before and assured me this could be fixed. We sat and went through everything and he was supposed to call me later on that afternoon. No phone call and nothing is fixed. It seems like they do not know how to set up the taxes for the state of WA or any state. They keep listing the taxes as WA PAID. The law requires a description of the taxes deducted so that everyone know what they are. None of their balances match mine.
Even though I am receiving numerous emails from Surepay to submit my payroll, NOTHING has been fixed and THEIR system does not allow me to submit it. Taxes not inputted correctly. Balances are incorrect. etc.
I have been attached to my phone for the last 3 days afraid of missing Surepays phone call to fix the payroll so I can submit the payroll today by 2 pm. (DAY 9)
There is still no resolution to the problems or any communication on how to get this fixed at this point, I regret signing up for SurePayroll and am seriously questioning whether to continue. Surepay does not respect a customers time. At this point, I will not be transferring my other customers to them. Looking for a payroll service again....

Absolutely terrible - Avoid at all costs

Absolutely terrible. Everything went wrong. It started with them confusing the forms we need to fill out. We ended up filling out forms for OR state, which they said we had to because our employees lived in that state, even though our business is in WA state. After forms were submitted, we learned that was incorrect. So we filled out WA forms.

But then they still had OR in their system so they submitted everything to the wrong state. Many hours on the phone to get that cleaned up.

Then they didn't send our L&I fees to WA (even though they took them from us) stating that because we didn't cut a check in June, they didn't have to send it even though staff worked in June (this was our first month). Of course, that was wrong, so we were penalized with interest by the state of WA.

Reminder: THEY HAD OUR FREAKING MONEY FOR THIS!! They simply didn't send it. We had to pay penalties and interest on money that we had already paid to SurePayroll but that they chose not to submit.

They claimed this wasn't their fault. They told us they wouldn't cover the penalties or interest. And that's where we are right now.

We are not even 3 months into working with them and our payroll is a complete disaster. We're probably on a list with the state of WA as a problem employer. And we paid penalties and interest on funds that we had already paid, that I'm CERTAIN SurePayroll EARNED interest on.

This company came highly recommended by close friends in the same industry, so we don't really know why it was so bad, but our story doesn't seem like a one-off according to Reddit. So I would say avoid at all costs.

This company forces arbitration, a super shady way to avoid being held accountable in a court of law, but we're currently exploring our options nonetheless.

Spend a little more for a service that files returns on time and responds to issues!

If all you need is a company that can spit out a paycheck, they may be fine... until you have a problem. They have now failed to file my state unemployment returns two quarters in a row. The first time, it took multiple emails and phone calls until I finally asked to speak with a supervisor and learned that literally nothing had been done to resolve my issue. This person insisted that it was resolved, but I have now received a delinquency notice for the second quarter. I've been on the phone for over an hour waiting for a supervisor in the hope that it will actually be resolved this time, and the latest CSR I spoke with argued with me about whether or not I could speak to one.

My advice? Pay a little more for a service that actually does its job and has any kind of customer service at all.
