DO NOT RENT FROM NU CAR RENTALS

DO NOT RENT FROM NU CAR RENTALS. They are absolute Scam and based on multiple reviews they are constantly conducting Unauthorized Charges!

My Experience:
They Literally Stole Money Right Off My Credit Card!!!
I just rented from their Salt Lake City location this past weekend (Agreement SLC01-49989).
I explicitly told the counter agent that I had my own full-coverage insurance and did NOT want any of their add-ons.

When I checked my final receipt, I found out they secretly crammed nearly $100 in extra unauthorized charges onto my bill without my knowledge or permission!

Roadside Assistance: $41.97

Supplemental Liability Insurance: $48.15

Operator Recovery Fee: $9.01

Taxes & CC Surcharges on Fake Fees: $20.79

Let's Get a Class Action Lawsuit Started!

Based on several reviews I just read from many platforms, this company is consistently misleading and ripping off customers for financial gains, THAT needs to stop.
If you’ve been scammed or hit with unauthorized charges by this car rental scammers, here is what we need to do right now (As I Will Do Shortly after this) to hold them accountable and get our money back:

File Official Complaints:
Submit reports to the State Attorney General (UT, TN, CO, etc.), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Dispute the Charges:
Call your bank/credit card company immediately and file a chargeback for fraud/unauthorized fees.

Join Together for a Class Action:
Keep every single piece of evidence, booking confirmations, receipts, and bank statements. I am actively looking into class action attorneys and platforms like ClassAction.org to push for a lawsuit so all victimized customers can get fully reimbursed.

Absolutely terrible company. Avoid at all costs.

NÜ Car Rentals is an extremely incompetent company. They rent cars from other rental companies and seem completely incapable of managing any issue when something goes wrong.

They failed to provide my booked car. I tried to contact them many times and it was impossible. Forcing me to rent another car at a much higher price.

I submitted a formal complaint 8 months ago. They have finally replied only to ask for more information…

Eight months to respond to a customer complaint is simply unacceptable. No solution, no compensation, no proper explanation. Just complete incompetence and terrible customer service.

I strongly recommend avoiding this company.

DANGEROUS

DANGEROUS! – NU/Expo Car Rentals in Vancouver

The Hyundai Elantra that we were given had not been properly inspected for safety and posed a serious risk to our family. The front brakes were metal-on-metal, scraping together in a terrible grinding noise.

The tires were measured to be a ‘0’ out of ‘8’ for their tread. This issue could have caused hydroplaning or a blown-out tire - both very dangerous situations.

When I called to inform the rental company that we were unable to drive this vehicle, we were told that it was safe to drive, to not worry about it, and to drive slowly (!?!?!). This was not an appropriate solution at all. We should be able to rely on a safe rental vehicle, drive it on any appropriate roads and to drive the speed limit.

We were misled and told that the brakes on this vehicle were changed 3 months ago. Once we saw the brake pads, we knew that was impossible and that we were being lied to. We wasted time on our holiday arranging for a technician to inspect the car, for parts to be ordered and the brakes to be replaced and were then required to drive on the bald tires back to the rental office.

We had to rent another vehicle from Budget Rental to continue on our trip, as the shop needed time to replace the brakes on this vehicle. The cost of the additional rental was more than $340. Even at that, we were relieved to be driving in a safe vehicle.

Renting from this company was a dangerous, risky mistake. This is pure negligence on the part of NU/Expo rental agency and could have caused us to have a very serious accident. For your safety…avoid this company at all costs!

Our experience with Nu Car Rentals and Expedia booking

In advance of our trip to Vancouver on June 16th we booked a Nu car rental through Expedia. We were supposed to arrive into Vancouver around 12pm and were going to pick the car up at 1pm. Unfortunately our flight was so delayed that we didn’t get in till 11pm. As Nu car rental closes at 6pm and we were staying a distance away we had to book another rental car with another agency at the airport. Nu Car Rental would not refund us our money and although Expedia contacted Nu Car Rental’s to request our refund we were not reimbursed. Nu Car Rentals has taken our money and Expedia still promotes such a company on their website. We have been loyal customers with booking through Expedia but now are very disappointed!!
Nu Car Rentals are not approved by the Better Business Bureau but Expedia is promoting them!

PLEASE Never rent from NU! Period!
I read other review! Same complaints about hidden extra charges, final insurance cost double than what they tell you and charges separately by some insurance company after two days of rental!
Better you rent from other known company, even if their quotes are higher!

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT RENTING A CAR…

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT RENTING A CAR HERE!!! Absolutely the biggest scamming scumbag car rental company I've seen it 50 years! My 4 day quote online was $165. First thing I said was the I did not want any extra insurance or roadside service. They say OK, no problem. Then they give you the paper to initial that you don't want these add-ons. If you don't read every line, they slip in that you agree to a $59 a day insurance charge and a daily charge for road service. Read every line. Most car companies will give you what you want and not try to sneak it in. Total was another $298 tacked onto my bill. Basically my rental charge was tripled. Look at some of the otheR sites that have reviewed the same thing. There are literally thousands.

NUCAR WORST RENTAL CAR EVER!!!!!

If I could give this car rental place negative 1000 I would. This was the worse rental car experience known to man. The low tire pressure light came on asi was driving. I pulled over and called them immediately. They said I could return the car and get another car. However, when I arrived both rental car agents the blonde and the brunette, said I would need to file a claim or get the tire repaired. I declined. What a low hanging piece of horse manure. Do not do business with this company. Worst rental car experience ever.

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. Tried to call them when I landed to ask about a car seat. No one picks up at the rental office. Had to drive offsite in a van without a car seat. When we arrived they said they had one available. I waited in line for like 2 hours and when I got to the front they didn’t have one anymore and told me to uber with my 2 yr old to Walmart and buy a seat. They ended up finding one after another 30min wait. Then when I dropped off the car they charged me for an extra day.

Dear Valued Customer,

We sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience you experienced during your rental.

We understand your concerns regarding the availability of a child safety seat. You stated that you attempted to contact the rental office after landing to inquire about a car seat but were unable to reach anyone. You were then transported to the off-site location without a car seat and, upon arrival, were initially advised that one was available.

You further explained that, after waiting approximately two hours in line, you were informed that a car seat was no longer available and were advised to take an Uber with your two-year-old to Walmart to purchase one. You ultimately waited an additional 30 minutes before a car seat was located.

You also stated that you were charged for an additional rental day when you returned the vehicle, which you are disputing.

We take your concerns regarding child safety equipment, communication with the rental location, the handling of the car-seat request, and the additional-day charge seriously. We would like to review the rental records and applicable charges to better understand what occurred and determine whether any adjustment may be warranted.

To assist us with our investigation, may we kindly request the following details?

1. Confirmation # ending in NU or Rental Agreement #
2. Pickup and return dates
3. Primary driver's name
4. Pickup location

Once we receive these details, we will coordinate with the appropriate affiliate to review the car-seat availability and rental records, as well as the circumstances surrounding the additional-day charge.

We sincerely regret the difficulties you encountered, particularly while traveling with a young child, and appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention.

Haidee

NO ONE WAS THERE AT 8 AM TO OPEN ON A MONDAY, AND IT MADE ME LATE TO MY FLIGHT!!! AND MUCH MORE!!

I arrived at the rental office at 8 AM sharp on Monday, right at their posted opening time, to return my vehicle. There was not a single employee there. The gates remained locked until approximately 8:30 AM, and the shuttles didn’t start running until after 9 AM.

As a result, myself and several other customers were left stranded unable to return our vehicles in time and ended up being over an hour late to the airport, nearly missing our flights. I ultimately had to pay for an Uber to avoid missing my flight. You also have to take two separate shuttles to get to and from the airport, to the airport rental center, and then to the rental location, which can take over two hours!! And on top of that they do not hold reservations.

The insurance situation was another major issue. I was charged $30 per day for their protection plan despite specifically asking if I could decline it. I was told I could not opt out, which I later found out was not accurate. I was eventually able to get a refund, but only after having to drive back to the office. Even worse, the protection plan was charged again after I returned the vehicle.

And if something goes wrong, good luck getting help — the phone lines do not connect to a real human and the email addresses are invalid. So god forbid you need a refund for an accidental charge or need an employee to open the gates, because you’ll be straight out of luck!!

Overall, this was an extremely frustrating and stressful experience. Between the transportation issues, unapproved charges, difficulty getting in contact with the company, and employees not being there during their advertised business hours, I strongly recommend avoiding this rental company at all costs!!!

Dear Alexa,

Based on the information provided by our San Diego affiliate, we can confirm that the Collision Damage Waiver fee has already been refunded.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

==========================

Dear Alexa,

We sincerely apologize for the frustration, inconvenience, and stress you experienced during your rental.

We understand your concerns regarding the return process. You stated that you arrived at the rental location at approximately 8:00 AM on a Monday, the posted opening time, but found the gates locked and no staff available. You reported that the location did not open until approximately 8:30 AM and that shuttle service did not begin until after 9:00 AM, which caused significant delays and required you to arrange an Uber to avoid missing your flight.

You also expressed concerns regarding the transportation process between the airport, rental center, and rental location, which you stated could take more than two hours due to the multiple shuttle transfers. Additionally, you raised concerns regarding reservation availability and whether reservations are held as expected.

We also understand your concerns regarding the protection plan charge. You stated that you specifically asked whether the $30-per-day protection plan could be declined but were advised that it was mandatory. You later learned that you could decline the coverage and were able to obtain a refund after returning to the location. You further reported that the protection plan was charged again after the vehicle was returned.

Additionally, you expressed concerns about difficulties reaching the rental location or obtaining assistance when needed, including issues with the telephone lines and email addresses provided.

We take your concerns regarding the location's operating hours, return procedures, transportation arrangements, protection plan charges, reservation handling, and customer support very seriously. With this, your review has been forwarded to our San Diego Affiliate under Ticket #402702.

We sincerely regret the difficulties you encountered, particularly the delay during the vehicle return and the resulting concern about missing your flight. We appreciate you bringing these matters to our attention and giving us the opportunity to investigate them further.

RESERVED A CAR AND PREPAID ONLINE - ARRIVED AFTER A LENGTHY WAIT AND VAN DRIVE FROM THE AIRPORT. THEY INFORMED US THAT THEY HAD RENTED THE CAR AND, DESPITE THE LOT BEING FULL, THEIR RUDE STAFF SAID THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO UPGRADE TO A MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE MODEL. MIND YOU, THEY TOOK OUR CARD# AND ID BEFORE TELLING US THAT THEY "HAD NO MORE OF THAT VEHICLE TYPE AVAILABLE". Dear Valued Customer,

We sincerely apologize for the frustration and disappointment you experienced during your rental.

We understand your concerns regarding the vehicle availability at the time of pickup. You stated that you prepaid for your reservation online and, after a lengthy wait and shuttle ride from the airport, were informed that the reserved vehicle type was no longer available. You further stated that you were asked to pay for a more expensive vehicle upgrade and that your card information and identification had already been collected before you were informed of the vehicle shortage.

We also understand your concerns regarding the interaction with the rental staff and the manner in which the situation was handled. You ultimately decided not to proceed with the rental and arranged alternative transportation through Lyft.

We take your concerns regarding vehicle availability, the handling of prepaid reservations, upgrade charges, and customer service very seriously. Absolute scumbags

Absolute scumbags. They refused to let me take my rental car in Albania, which was key to my entire honeymoon, because my credit card wasn't valid for at least six months. THIS IS NOT IN THE RENTAL AGREEMENT. I went through it line by line with three Nu employees and they still insisted that the 6-month threshold was an actual rule. That was lie number one.

They then said that they had not been paid directly and that Expedia would refund me because the car had not been delivered. Expedia informed me that Nu had indeed been paid directly. Lie number two.

Expedia contacted the company, and an employee said they would refund me. Then a few days later they said they wouldn't, and that all they could offer was a credit -- as if I'd ever rent a car from these pigs again.

Dear Clay,

We sincerely apologize for the frustration and disappointment you experienced with your rental, particularly during such an important occasion as your honeymoon.

We understand your concerns regarding the credit card requirement. You stated that you were advised the credit card needed to have been valid for at least six months, despite not finding this requirement in the rental agreement. You also indicated that you discussed the terms with multiple NU employees and received conflicting information regarding this requirement.

You further stated that you were initially advised that Expedia would issue your refund because NU had not received payment directly, but that Expedia later informed you that NU had in fact been paid. You also reported receiving conflicting information regarding the refund, including being told that a refund would be issued and later being offered only a credit.

Based on our system under Ticket #400487, your booking was already refunded on Sept. 3, 2026 amounting to 444.60.

We sincerely regret the frustration this situation caused, especially given the importance of your trip. We appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention and giving us the opportunity to investigate the matter further.

The car broke twice

The car stalled twice — then NU towed it and called it my “return”

I wish I were exaggerating, because this experience sounds like a comedy sketch.

I booked NU through Hotwire in Fort Lauderdale. At pickup, there wasn't a traditional rental agent handling my transaction—I dealt with a remote representative through a video/kiosk system.

Then I was required to pay $22.99/day for “PARTIAL DAMAGE WAIVE” because I was told my insurance didn't sufficiently cover “loss of use.”

After repeatedly requesting my signed rental agreement, NU finally sent it to me. Their own agreement states:

“Waiver is not mandatory and is not insurance.”

So that's interesting.

Then things stopped being funny.

The vehicle stalled/lost power while I was driving with multiple lanes of oncoming traffic. It also displayed “Service Due Now.”

After hours of calls, holds, voicemail, a full mailbox and emails, NU's solution was for me to drive the malfunctioning vehicle approximately 45 minutes back to them.

I asked them to put in writing that they were recommending I drive a vehicle I had just reported losing power in traffic. Getting that instruction documented was, unsurprisingly, another adventure.

I nevertheless attempted to follow their instructions.

THE CAR STALLED/LOST POWER AGAIN.

The dashboard/electrical system and radio went off. I had to put it in Park and restart it. Thankfully, I have video documenting the intermittent electrical/dashboard problem.

At that point, I wasn't interested in discovering where Stall #3 might happen.

NU eventually agreed to tow the vehicle.

You might assume that means they'd bring a replacement.

No.

NU told me they “currently lack the staff to deliver a replacement vehicle” and wanted me to spend approximately $100 on an Uber to their facility. They would consider reimbursing me later if they determined the malfunction was their responsibility.

The possibility of getting back with the tow-truck driver was even raised.

Nothing says “replacement rental transportation” quite like hitching a ride with the person towing away your broken rental.

And then came the finale:

NU towed the malfunctioning vehicle back into its possession and then refused to refund the remaining prepaid rental days because they characterized the vehicle as having been “returned.”

To be crystal clear: I did not voluntarily return a functioning rental because I no longer wanted it. NU recovered its vehicle by tow after I reported that it had stalled/lost power twice.

I was left without the rental transportation I prepaid for, while NU had its vehicle back.

Hotwire has since told me NU refused to refund them, so Hotwire says it cannot refund me.

Then NU responded publicly to my Google review saying they were “very concerned” and telling me to contact Customer Excellence.

Excellent suggestion—except I'd already spent more than a day calling and emailing NU about exactly these problems.

I have preserved the agreement, booking disclosures, emails, call records, photographs, towing communications and video of the malfunction.

Cars break. That's not why I'm leaving this review.

It's what happened after the car broke that earned this review.

If you rent here: photograph everything, save every screen, question every charge and get absolutely everything in writing.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANY RENTAL…

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANY RENTAL NEEDS!! STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!!

Car was rented at Phoenix location, was a little weird as an unmarked van picked up in the parking of the airport car rental center that we took a train to and took us on a ten minute ride to old building in a not great part of town.
We told the agent that even though the reservation was in my moms name, my daughter would be doing all the driving, he added her ($39.96). We also declined the insurance as BOTH OF US were already covered by our State Farm Ins. ($127.96). Also declined roadside service as we BOTH HAVE AAA (31.96). Held $53.20 for prepaid gas so we didn't have to return with full tank, however we purchased 11 gallons ($56.15). The tank holds 12.2 gallons. The tank was almost full when returned but charged the full $53.20.
Our rental reservation was prepaid with reservation $163.66, however the additional fees ($315.02) added up to more than the rental.
The agent (Alex from previous review) was very nice and said to initial and sign were indicated on rental agreement on screen (that was too small to read) and to not worry that the final invoice would adjust the charges upon returning the car. Final invoice came in the amount of $478.68 with a credit for the prepaid $163.66 leaving a remaining balance of $315.02, no adjustments were made. Called customer service and they said because we initialed the additional charges I was stuck with them.
WATCH OUT FOR EXTRA CHARGES AS THEY WILL BE MORE THAN THE CAR RENTAL
Other than the extra fees and the customer service on the phone to discuss issues, the experience was great.
We did however, have to get the car washed because the car was dirty with all windows spotted with dirt and we could not see out any of the windows.

Wish I could give negative stars on this Company!!!

Reply from NU Car Rentals

Dear Valued Customer,

We sincerely apologize for the frustration and disappointment you experienced during your Phoenix rental.

We understand your concerns regarding the additional charges applied to your rental. You stated that the reservation was prepaid for $163.66, but that additional charges totaling $315.02 were applied at the rental location, resulting in a final invoice of $478.68.

You explained that your daughter was added as an additional driver for $39.96, and that you declined the insurance coverage because both you and your daughter were already covered through State Farm. You also stated that you declined roadside assistance because you both have AAA. In addition, you were charged $53.20 for prepaid fuel, despite purchasing approximately 11 gallons of fuel for $56.15 and returning the vehicle with the tank nearly full.

We also understand your concern regarding the rental agreement. You stated that the representative advised you where to initial and sign on the electronic agreement, which you found difficult to read due to the size of the text, and that you were told the final invoice would be adjusted upon return. You were therefore disappointed when the final invoice did not reflect the adjustments you expected and were subsequently advised by customer service that the charges could not be changed because the agreement had been initialed and signed.

You also expressed concerns regarding the pickup process, including being transported from the airport rental center in an unmarked vehicle to an off-site facility. Additionally, you reported that the rental vehicle was dirty and that the windows had spots that affected visibility, requiring you to have the vehicle washed.

We take your concerns regarding the additional driver fee, insurance and roadside assistance selections, prepaid fuel charge, rental agreement explanation, and vehicle condition seriously. We would like to review the rental records and determine how these charges were presented and applied.

To assist us with our investigation, may we kindly request the following details?

1. Confirmation # ending in NU or Rental Agreement #
2. Pickup and return dates
3. Primary driver's name

Once we receive these details, we will coordinate with our Phoenix affiliate to review the signed Rental Agreement, Final Invoice, applicable insurance and roadside assistance selections, fuel charges, and vehicle condition records.

We would also appreciate clarification regarding whether the vehicle was documented as having been returned with a full or nearly full fuel tank and whether any adjustment may be warranted based on the findings.

We sincerely regret that your experience, particularly the handling of the additional charges and your subsequent communication with customer service, left you feeling that the terms were not clearly explained. We appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention and giving us the opportunity to investigate the matter further.

Best regards,
Haidee
